To practice speaking publicly and analyzing text, as well as experiencing a new way of having a group discussion.
As a primary and middle school teacher, I have used Socratic Seminar to introduce or review topics and to have students practice English and become more confident as public speakers. They seem to like it because it is low risk with opportunities for less and more talkative students to share, and they like being able to understand the perspectives of their peers, not just the teacher.
Blank paper and pen or pencel
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The teacher will guide the conversation so that sensitive topics will be avoided.
