Let's Get Mummified

During this class, we will learn all about the mummification process.  We will start out by learning about why Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead, who they mummified, and how.  We will learn through a teacher-created slide show and video.  We will then get hands-on!  We will start the mummification process on a tomato or apple.  We will also mummify a doll or stuffed animal and entomb it in our individually designed sarcophagus.  This class will involve having to prepare by getting supplies ahead of time.  Please see the supply list below. This is also included in the handout.  I hope to see you in the classroom. 

Project 1 - Fruit Mummification
You will need to following items:
1 apple cut into two halves or 2 tomatoes
Knife (for cutting fruit) & measuring cup
Salt
Baking soda
A spoon if using tomatoes
2 cups that you can keep your fruit in for a week (large enough to fit the fruit in, but not so big that there is a ton of extra space)
A place to keep our experiment for a week

Project 2 - Doll Mummification
You will need the following items:
An 18 in hard doll such as barbie, you can use any doll or stuffed animal you like but that is about the size we are going for.  You can buy these for $1 at the Dollar Store
Linen strips, toilet paper or streamers and tape
Water and a small towel
Salt to rub on the body
Perfume, cologne, or air freshener to spray on body
Markers 
Some kind of jewelry to bury with the body (see cut out options in handout)
Things that they would find important to be buried with (see cut out options in handout)
The attached (in handout) cut out sheet for organs and other important parts for the project (print on oak tag if possible)
A shoebox or similar size box
