Class Experience

Thinking logically is an essential problem solving skill, and one of the most fun ways to strengthen that type of thinking is through puzzles! There are so many fun puzzles to learn and students will learn four of them through this course.

Each class, learners will engage in solving one type of logic puzzle. At the beginning of class, students will learn the rules of solving the specific puzzle, and then will work cooperatively to solve it. I will facilitate solving by providing strategies and assistance, when needed. Learners may be split into small groups and work in breakout rooms to allow maximum participation. I will monitor breakout rooms by rotating through them regularly.

Here is the sequence of number puzzles:
-Class 1: Suguru (using digits 1-5 to complete cages, no math required)
-Class 2: Kakuro (simple addition and logic are used to solve a math "crossword" puzzle)
-Class 3: KenKen - two operations (also known as Mathdoku - logic combined with simple addition and subtraction)
-Class 4: KenKen - four operations (also known as Mathdoku - logic combined with simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

*Note: Learners will interact with the puzzles using Google Jamboard. Being logged into Google Chrome makes it function better, and if your learner is working on a tablet, downloading the Jamboard app (for free) wil make the interaction more smooth.
**Note: Jamboard is a great way for learners to work together to solve puzzles, but if learners are using the tools in a way that is distracting to other learners, I will have no choice but to remove them from the meeting so that class can continue without disruption.

Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
