Class Experience

As a previous school teacher-librarian, and special education teacher, I have a passion for HUMANS and books where there are critical thinkings and learnings on how to be a better human. Thus the creation of my book clubs-- "Let's Gain Another Perspective."

As a researcher, it is important to shed the truth via reliable, unbiased information and sources. As a teacher, it is important for me to guide learners to understand difficult topics within their life experience, background, and personality. As a reader, it is important to take a risk to learn, grown, and do better from feelings and thoughts stemming from this novel. The point of view from a child with a difference varies widely based on the personal experiences of that human so it is essential to learn about via facts, open dialogue of feelings, and empathy to strengthen our own humanity.

Although Wonder is a work of fiction, it is a masterpiece in weaving diversity with human stories of kindness and courage. After reading this book when it was first published, it instantly became a top book of all time for me. Meeting the author, R. J. Palacio sealed the deal. Choose Kindness has been my mantra ever since!

I have taught many middle-school level books to several classes on sensitive topics such as this and within our discussions and learning, we are able to be empathetic, grow, and try to put ourselves into the shoes of the main characters. Being kind, respectful to all opinions and feelings have guided these discussions. In addition, my experience as a special ed teacher has given me the opportunity to understand, relate, and assist learners who may get emotionally overwhelmed with a topic.

In my homeschooling of my 15-year-old son, we dive deep into learning by reading varying books having unique perspectives on humanity...this is one of those books!

My teaching philosophy:
As a continual learner (a person always thinking, wondering, and asking WHY) -- I strive to inspire all of my students of that same passion--to be curious-minded to the world around them. To be playful. To be passionate. To be Adventurous. To be a mistake maker. To be a learner who has no boundaries!
