Assessment
Students are assessed based on participation and following instructions to create their own unique poems. This also includes being kind and respectful to all other students in the class, as well as towards their own experience of the writing process.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Each week we’ll learn about a new type of poetry—
from pantoum to acrostic,
and free verse to haiku.

Join us in this special class,
where the poet is YOU.

In each class we’ll begin with a short introduction to the style of poem we’ll be practicing and then I’ll give you simple instructions to play with writing some poems of your own.

Have fun playing with words and exploring new formats and poetry structure.

I’ll be there to help and offer assistance as needed during writing time and then at the end of class we’ll have time for a Poetry Spotlight where everyone who would like to share can take a turn reading a favorite poem they’ve written.

I’m so excited to get started on this journey of exploring poetry with you!

We'll meet twice each week to keep the poetry flowing from your fingertips and build community together as we go. :)

Feel free to reach out with any questions and I hope to see you in class soon!

Our theme each week will vary based on student interest, but here are some of the types of poems we’ll be practicing…

Pantoum
Acrostic
Haiku
Diamante
Cinquain
Limerick
Free Verse
Sonnet

Hi! My name is Caitlin Sanders, and I love teaching. :) Kids are my favorite people and it is a joy to connect with them in teaching & learning each day.

**Starting Jan. 2nd, 2024, I'll be teaching online full-time so I won't have as many class times available. I will still make time in my schedule to teach classes on Saturday mornings and some weekday evenings as I'm able to -- so feel free to reach out with any requests! I'll be happy to try to accommodate you!**

I have a passion for storytelling and love to combine stories, nature, and writing into my thematic and engaging classes.

I believe every child has a unique perspective and a unique voice that deserves to be heard. In my classes I help students uncover this through reading stories and by supporting them in writing their own.

I also love nature and so I often incorporate nature into my classes as well. :) Nature has a magical way of helping us to connect more deeply with ourselves and with those around us.

I have a compassionate approach to teaching and learning...and, to life! This comes across in my classes as patience, a genuine caring, and a dedication to supporting each student in a way that builds their confidence and unique sense of self so they can shine and bring their truest, most authentic selves and experiences to the world.

I truly care about every child I teach. I love using music to enhance my classes, and encourage students to discover and express their own creativity.

I grew up in Iowa City, IA and currently live in Portland, OR. I have an adorable little dog I fell in love with when I went to the shelter looking for a big dog. Turns out, I was destined for this cute little ten pound guy instead! :) We enjoy training and learning new tricks, as well as peaceful, awe-inspiring walks through the woods where we have many adventures on the trail!

The following quotation by Holocaust survivor Jay Sommer was at the the heart of my mission as a public school teacher and I continue to carry it forward in everything I do:

"Inspiring students with a sense of their own worth gives them the confidence to express themselves more freely, to explore and learn through their mistakes, and to regard learning as an adventure."

It is such a joy to now bring that passion and enthusiasm to connect with students online. :)

I'd love to work with your child to inspire them with a sense of their own confidence and creativity, abundance and longevity in the world. I believe your child deserves the very best, always.
