Description
Class Experience
I have a specialized interest in the topics covered, and I currently offer longer courses in some of the topics, such as the Salem Witch Trials and the Roanoke Colony, that the students may want to take after learning about a topic that interests them. I have done a lot of research about the topics that I teach, and I have covered them in other classes. During each weekly meeting, students will learn about a different topic from history. I will present the information and we will discuss the...
Students will gain a better understanding of these historical events, and use critical thinking to discuss and analyze the events.
I have over twenty years of experience teaching rhetoric writing, reading, language arts, and critical thinking skills. I am familiar with the material, and have the experience to foster meaningful learning. I have been teaching English, Language Arts, History, ESOL, reading, and writing for twenty years. I have taught all levels of secondary English, Social Studies, and History, both in-person and online. I currently teach longer, more in depth courses on some of the topics that we will cover in this course. I have done a lot of research into these topics, because they interest me, and my students find unusual history fascinating. I have a degree in English Teaching, and I enjoy teaching students how to explore historical events through written material. As an English teacher, I have taught students to read and critically analyze differentiating opinions about fictional works and non-fictional topics and arrive at a substantiated belief. In addition, I have taught in a team taught, multidisciplinary Language Arts/History classes at the secondary school level.
I will supply any handouts necessary.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The course covers graphic and sensitive topics such as death and murder. Those topics will be discussed with a high degree of sensitivity with respect to the individuals involved, as well as the individuals taking the course. I will facilitate productive and diplomatic discussion regarding these topics.
