Welcome to "Let's Explore Earth (An Introduction to Geosciences) Part 2"! In this 7-week course, we will meet once per week to discuss a wide variety of topics within the field of geosciences. See below for full descriptions of each week's class. The lessons in this course are designed in a part lecture-style, part discussion-style fashion, with some short video clips and interactive activities throughout. Every lesson includes a handout which students can use to document their learning throughout the course. In addition, all learners are provided unlimited web access to the lesson slides after each class-- no need to worry about writing all the information down! Attendance in the first part of the Let's Explore Earth series is NOT mandatory for taking this course. Lesson 1 "Fossils and Paleontology: A Peek Into the Past" -- In this lesson, we will learn all about fossils; different types of fossils, how they form, what paleontologists do, and how fossils are used by scientists. Students will take a look at some real samples of common index fossils! This is Lesson 9 of Let's Explore Earth. Lesson 2 "What's Inside a Volcano? The Anatomy and Geology of Stratovolcanoes" -- We will use our knowledge of volcanoes and how they are formed to dive into the anatomy of stratovolcanoes. We will learn about features of active and extinct volcanoes, and also look at a few different types of lava flows, with videos included. This is Lesson 10 of Let's Explore Earth. Lesson 3 "Mineralogy 101: Classifying and Observing Minerals (With REAL Mineral Samples!) Part 1" -- In this class, we will learn about the many different ways we can classify minerals. We will discuss the differences between rocks and minerals, and learn some skills that can help us to identify minerals in our own lives! This is Lesson 11 of Let's Explore Earth. Lesson 4 "Mineralogy 101: Classifying and Observing Minerals (With REAL Mineral Samples!) Part 2" -- Each student will complete a "mineral biography" for homework, and will present their chosen mineral to the class! We will also complete a fun interactive quiz to test our rock identification abilities. Students are welcome to bring any mineral samples that they own to show to the class. This is Lesson 12 of Let's Explore Earth. Lesson 5 "The Dirt on Dirt: Pedology (The Study of Soils) For Beginners" -- Learners will learn about different types of soils and soil composition, how pedologists study soils, and WHY we should care about soil in the real world! We will also discuss the affect of climate change and human actions on soils. This is Lesson 13 of Let's Explore Earth. Lesson 6 "Rock Falls, Avalanches, and Landslides, Oh My! A Lesson on Mass Wasting" -- In this class, we will learn all about mass wasting! We will briefly explore many different types of mass wasting, such as avalanches, mudslides, rock falls, and much more. We will learn about the physics behind mass wasting events and why they occur, as well as discuss ideas on how to mitigate damage from mass wasting events. This is Lesson 14 of Let's Explore Earth. Lesson 7: "Earth Science in Outer Space? The Geology of Mars" -- Learners will use the knowledge they have gained from the past 14 lessons to study Earth sciences, but on another planet: Mars! We will examine a wide variety of geological topics and concepts from a Martian perspective. We will also briefly examine a really popular question: can humans live on Mars? This is Lesson 15 of Let's Explore Earth.
Learning Goals
Students will become familiar with a wide range of topics under the umbrella of geosciences. They will be able to explain some important geological terms, theories, and concepts. They will gain a basic knowledge of fossils and paleontology, stratovolcanoes, minerals and mineral classification, soils, various types of mass wasting, and the geology of Mars.

Supply List
Learners will be given a handout for each lesson which they can use to document their learning. I suggest bringing pens/pencils and a ruler to each class. They may also bring paper to take additional notes, although this is not required! Extra supplies: Lesson 1: Students are given a trilobite model activity, which they MAY have time to begin class. They can bring glue and scissors to complete this short activity during or after class. Lesson 4: Students may bring in any minerals samples they may wish to show the class. Lesson 5: 3-7 days before the lesson, students will need to obtain some soil, put it in a jar with water, shake the jar, and let it sit until Lesson 5.

Hello everyone! My name is Annette and I'm a teacher originally from Toronto, Canada, but currently located in Nicaragua.
I have both passion AND experience teaching a wide variety of science topics. I developed an intense interest in geological and biological sciences from a very young age, and earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biology) and a Bachelor of Education, both from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have two years' in-school experience teaching Geography, Biology, and General Science for grades 7-13 in Canada and England, and three years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language online. I’ve been teaching classes in my subject areas here on Outschool for four years. However, I've been working with children in a variety of other settings for over 13 years! Here on Outschool, I offer a range of science classes and courses for approximately 10-16 year olds. I am also queer and I'm VERY passionate about providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming class environment for all of my students. My classroom is a place for all who need a safe space to learn.
*Please note:
-I always do my best to respond to any messages or questions within 24 hours
-All refunds follow Outschool's moderate refund policy. Please contact me directly for extenuating circumstances
-For learners outside of the set age range, or for learners with special requests or needs, feel free to contact me! I always do my best to accommodate every learner.
-All classes are designed to run for the designated amount of time. However, depending on number of learners and learner personalities, class may run slightly over or slightly under time.
-Absolutely NO homophobia, transphobia, racism, or bullying of any kind will be tolerated in my classes. Students who display such behaviour will be immediately removed from class with no refund.
When I'm not teaching I enjoy spending time outdoors, especially surfing and hiking. I also enjoy reading, crocheting, and relaxing with my cat Loki when I’m not outside. I also love travelling and have visited 37 different countries!
