Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
As a former classroom teacher I often taught math and science standards in the same lesson. They naturally are paired together. This cross curriculum course focuses on common science topics in upper elementary and middle school and their corresponding math topic. Each week students will do a collaborative science experiment, complete the corresponding lesson for the math and science topic in Nearpod, discuss, and evaluate the results.

This course will require students to work together to prove a hypothesis, evaluate their collective results, and make modifications and apply the data, and measurement math skills.

All experiments use common household items. All experiments will need an adult to supervise however all experiments are designed to be safe.

Week 1, will focus on evaluating finished experiments, and a review of the scientific method. The math skills will focus on graphing and analysing graphs. There will be a Nearpod lesson and within that lesson will be a collaborative portion. There will also be several at home experiments listed to practice using the scientific method.

Weeks 2-4 will follow the following format:
Mondays: The Nearpod lesson for the math and science skills will be posted. The problem they are looking to evaluate will also be posted. (In video form by me)
Tuesdays: Students will (collaboratively) create an experiment based on a hypothesis for their problem.
Thursday: Students post experiment results
Each student will need to conduct their experiment and post their work in the classroom, each student's data will count as one trial, so it will be important for all students to post their trial information this will help account for errors and give a better picture of the results.
Friday: Students discuss and analyse their collective results.

Week 2:
Math Skill: Collecting and organizing data and using the metric system to measure (length).
Science Skill: Forces at work (drag, gravity, thrust, and lift)

Week 3:
Math Skill: Working with Liquid Units of Measure (converting between measurements metric system)
Science Skill: Understanding Matter: Evaporation

Week 4:
Math Skill: Working with temperature/time (And problem solving)
Science Skill: Thermodynamics (In relationship to varying types of matter)
