Let’s Draw Mythical Creatures! (Series 2)

In this ongoing course, students will learn to draw mythical creatures, using colored pencil. In this second series, students will draw a kitsune (fox), basilisk (snake), appaloosa alicorn, leaf lizard, griffin, and phoenix (bird).

Description

Class Experience

Kitsune

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a kitsune (full body). 
2. Students will learn techniques to blend, apply, and layer colored pencil.
3. Students will learn techniques to create movement in their art by drawing several tails on their kitsune.
4. Students will learn about myths revolving the kitsune.

Basilisk

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a basilisk (full body). 
2. Students will learn techniques to smoothly blend colored pencil.
3. Students will learn techniques to draw scaly texture using colored pencil.
4. Students will learn about myths revolving the basilisk.

Appaloosa Alicorn (Winged Unicorn)

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of an appaloosa alicorn (full body). 
2. Students will learn techniques to draw an appaloosa alicorn standing on its hind legs. 
3. Students will learn techniques to create a well balanced composition using positive and negative space.
4. Students will learn about myths revolving alicorns.

Leaf Lizard

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a leaf lizard (full body). 
2. Students will learn techniques to smoothly blend and add contrast to art using colored pencil.
3. Students will learn techniques of using a limited color palette to create a well-balanced composition, using colored pencil.
4. Students will learn techniques to create leaf and wood texture using colored pencil.
5. Student will creatively think of their own myths revolving leaf lizards.

Griffin

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a griffin (full body). 
2. Students will learn techniques to layer colored pencil to create shadows.
3. Students will learn techniques to burnish (blend) colored pencil.
4. Students will learn about myths revolving griffins.

Phoenix

1. Students will learn techniques to sketch a proportionate contour drawing (outline) of a phoenix (full body). 
2. Students will learn techniques to draw semi-realistic feathers, using colored pencil.
3. Students will learn techniques to draw saturated colors, using colored pencil.
4. Students will learn about myths revolving the phoenix.
Because of how detailed these drawings are, there is a good chance students will need to finish their work outside of the designated class time.
***I will be using Prismacolor colored pencils, but students can use what they have. ***Students may use baby oil and Q-tips to blend their colored pencil drawings if they want, but it is not required. Kitsune -Paper -Everyday pencil -Everyday eraser and/or kneaded eraser -Colored Pencils: tan/brown, brown, dark brown, black, white, gold (if possible) Basilisk -Paper -Everyday pencil -Everyday eraser and/or kneaded eraser -Colored Pencils: light green, dark green, dark brown, black, white, gold (if possible) Appaloosa Alicorn -Paper -Everyday pencil -Everyday eraser and/or kneaded eraser -Colored Pencils: green, dark green, brown, dark brown, black, white, gold (if possible) Leaf Lizard -Paper -Everyday pencil -Everyday eraser and/or kneaded eraser -Colored Pencils: light green, dark green, yellow, brown, dark brown, black, white Griffin -Paper -Everyday pencil -Everyday eraser and/or kneaded eraser -Colored Pencils: tan/brown, brown, dark brown, light blue, black, white, gold (if possible) Phoenix -Paper -Everyday pencil -Everyday eraser and/or kneaded eraser -Colored Pencils: red, light orange, orange, yellow, light green, dark brown, black, white
Students will be assessed throughout class and at the end of class through questions and/or sharing of drawings.
1 hour 20 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please be aware that this course uses materials that may be harmful to your student if used inappropriately.  If you think your student may use any class materials inappropriately and/or potentially cause harm, please provide adult supervision for your student.
