Class Experience

Fine motor skills are necessary for writing. While many children are not ready to write until they are five or six, practicing copying simple pictures is a wonderful and fun way to develop early fine motor skills! Young kids who are actively involved in creating their own part of the lesson with their eyes, hands and ears are learning kids!

In this class designed for preschool and early kindergarten aged learners, we will combine drawing, shape practice, colors, writing, letter recognition (upper and lowercase letter F) with a splash of science! What can we draw in our fishbowl? We will learn some simple facts about our aquatic friends! A blowfish or pufferfish can be used to practice circles, an angelfish can be drawn with triangles and a clownfish with oval and half circle shapes! We'll work on these three fish. We may also add other things as time allows such as a starfish. (Since we always have a range of abilities and age in these classes, I like to allow the opportunity to scaffold up for those who want to, while not overwhelming the younger ones). No pressure! Since water animals are so colorful, bring your very best creative ideas for how to use your box of crayons as we make the most unusual and interesting pictures! Throughout the lesson, we'll continue to practice and reinforce the letter "F" as we listen carefully for the sound. What else begins with "F" that we can add to our aquarium? (ferns, sea fan, etc).

This a fun, relaxed and low pressure environment. Creativity is encouraged! Bring your whole box of crayons and amaze me with your colors and imagination! The main goal is to just give the learner a positive and fun experience with directed drawing with some science thrown in that will later transition into developing their copying skills for handwriting writing in the near future. Using simple shapes such as circles and ovals in class will be great practice for this! I'm observing in my preschool drawing classes that many kids just take off with their own imagination in class with additional ideas and creating this springboard is exactly what we want!

I like to keep mics open in class for conversation, but I know that life happens and backgrounds can be noisy, especially if we have a full class. In these situations, I mute the learner but will frequently ask them to unmute so that they can speak and share their artwork because seeing everyone else's drawings and how different they all are is an incredibly fun part of class!

Other Details

Supply List
Paper and a colorful medium such as crayons, markers or colored pencils. I prefer crayons for this since I like to teach the kids how to outline their creations if they want, and working on combining colors, but if you have a marker fan, that is perfectly fine too!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello from beautiful northern New Jersey! I'm excited at the opportunity to continue to bring a love for learning to children after homeschooling my own children for the past 20 years. Since 2017, I have taught over 5700 classes to Chinese students ages 3 to 15. I have a BA degree in Elementary Education and English Writing (dual major) and an American Literature minor from William Paterson University in New Jersey. I have a New Jersey teaching license for grades K-8, and TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification.

As my children grew, I did a lot of volunteer teaching which includes several years of teaching preschool/kindergarten VBS (Vacation Bible School) and Sunday school classes, as well as teaching Pioneer Girls. In each of these, I heavily incorporated arts, crafts and hands on participation into our curriculum. I also taught a Sunday school class for special needs children for five years. This experience has given me an understanding of children with learning and behavioral challenges. Preschool aged children have always held a special place in my heart in my teaching experience with VIPKID, and I have incorporated puppets, art, and a lot of humor into my online classroom with them with great results. When I can get a belly laugh out of a student online, my whole day is made! My teaching style is low pressure with lots of positive encouragement, as I strive to help every child feel that they have something valuable to contribute.

When I was 12 years old, I discovered what would turn into my lifelong passion; antiques and history. In my early teens, I devoured every book in the library that I could find about antique dolls and toys. When I grew into adulthood, I channeled my obsession into a business and since 1997, I have owned Suburban Treasure, an online antique and collectibles business. I am also a professional antique doll restorationist.

In addition, I am also a self taught artist and since 2004, have created art dolls in my studio "Spring Valley Studios Sasha Dolls". My dolls have found their ways into collectors' homes all over the world!

My childhood interests shaped my future career. I realized in my own children that I very much wanted to foster in them that same love and desire for learning. I try to carry that passion into my classroom! My heart is in preschool and kindergarten aged learners and I have discovered truly how much I love this age group as I have been teaching it almost exclusively here on Outschool!
I hope to see your child soon in the classroom!
