Description
Class Experience
Mermaids, Dragons, Unicorns---what could be more epic?! Let's create some fantastic friends together! We'll practice some basic techniques for drawing, building and sculpting together. By learning to recognize the main shapes and features of some of our favorite imaginary creatures, students will build their confidence and ability to recreate any animal--real or imagined. We'll also spend some time learning a little about the history and special features of each daily creature. Class time...
Students will learn to identify basic shapes and features of selected mythical characters. Students will learn techniques for recreating those imaginary creatures on paper (drawing), with building blocks, and with clay or playdough. Students will learn introductory facts and stories about the featured creatures, and will practice observation skills as we examine those magical beings for their main features and shapes. Students will practice following directions, asking questions, and presentation skills.
I'm so excited to share my love of creating and especially MERMAIDS, DRAGONS and UNICORNS with you! I've been teaching STEAM and art classes through fun, engaging topics like these to preschool through middle school for 7 years through an independent STEAM education company, as well as at a local arts facility. I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be exercising our imaginations and learning about mythical creatures (yay!)--but we'll sneak in some colors, shapes, comparing and contrasting, observation, art skills and more--all things that preK, kindergartners and 1st graders love to learn and practice!
A related extension activity may be provided for post-class enrichment, but will always be optional.
Printable materials will be provided before camp begins. Access to a printer is required--however, if you do not have one, please reach out so that the teacher can work on a solution with you. (We will make it work!) Students should provide their own paper, pencil, colored pencils or crayons, playdough* or sculpting clay, creative building blocks such as plastic building bricks and baseplates, bristle blocks, wooden blocks, etc. Adult supervision or assistance may be required at the discretion of the parent, based on the individual student's capabilities and limitations. Please remember to remain off camera, per Outschool's safety policy. I am always happy to help families find an alternative material that can be adapted to use in class if any of these items are not available. *Note: Playdough may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease. I am happy to provide a recipe for gluten-free playdough upon request.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No formal assessment. Students may opt to share their creations during class, and teacher response and guidance will always be encouraging and positive.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Regarding supplies/activities: Movement activities are basic in nature (animal moves, etc) but please be sure to provide adult supervision if you feel it is necessary. Participation in movement activities is no required. Please contact the teacher with any concerns. Allergy Note: Playdough may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease.
