Let's Draw and Visit (Ages 13-18)
In this ongoing class we draw together, share what we're working on, and visit with each other. Very small groups with parallel play reduces social anxiety. Great for all learners: Neurodiversive, medically fragile, Autistic, ADHD and all!

This class has been created to support teens who are just beginning to socialize, and who like to draw, colour or build things. Our goals are to explore each other's play styles and will not involve goals around behaviors. The class is very small and will remain so in order to accommodate different needs. We are a Neuroaffirming Organization! We support learners with different needs and meet them where they are at. We are experienced scribes and enjoy exploring different approaches to writing and creating for each learner. Each week will be Learner Led and directed. As we work on our own projects side by side, we can talk or show our work or simply create art at the same time. I will draw on the whiteboard so everyone can see me create something that we are talking about. Our teaching style does not involve goals around modification of autistic behaviors. We will not be teaching or encouraging "typical" play, rather we will be curious about each child's unique, autistic play. Our approach is strength based. This ongoing class is learner directed to ensure that we are meeting learners where they are at. If you like to plan ahead, you can work with your teacher to do that. We have found drawing our own pictures and sharing them gives the opportunity to play beside each other. We work towards goals of being more comfortable and feeling more secure in social settings, then create opportunities for new interaction. (Like Making Friends Groups by ARI Learning.) We welcome accommodations and are always working to create better accessibility in our classrooms. Please let us know your specific needs, and we will be happy to make changes to our learning plans. We hope to see you soon! As this is a social group that is learner led with no curriculum, videos will not be shared with families to protect learner privacy. Social classes satisfy BC’s curriculum/BC Ministry of Education for K–12 around communication studies through: acquiring and presenting information; focusing on intent and purpose in delivery; and connecting and engaging with others.

Yvonne has been running social groups for ND/NT kids on Outschool for 6 months. We noticed a need for very small classes and spaces where different styles of play can be shared. As a homeschooling mum to an ND child, I understand the need for social time and that it will look different for every child. I've been a Girl Guide Leader, a musician, an artist and instructor for many years. I have a B.Mus from McGill and have travelled widely. I'm always open to learning and growing and I believe curiosity is a critical life skill.
