Class Experience

In this fun flexibly scheduled 4 week course students will learn how to successfully draw a self portrait of themselves in the Japanese kawaii / chibi style with step by step instructions. We will go over tips and tricks to achieve an authentic self portrait in the popular kawaii style, each creating our own individual drawing by the end of the course. Did you know you can make anything Kawaii?! They will then also learn how draw a variety of kawaii pets and favourite foods in this cute style. It will be a super creative and exciting course where students are free to express themselves through art and creativity. I will also give some great tips and tricks to what makes something look 'Kawaii' and a brief intro to it.

Week 1: Intro to Kawaii and Chibi, Kawaii tricks and step by step instruction on how to draw a Kawaii self portrait. Proportions and facial elements like eyes, mouths, and hair taught with room for individualisation.

Week 2: Additional fun things added to our self portraits to show more about our personalities. Cat ears? 9 tails? Headphones? Hairbands? Let's make it look like you! Creativity encouraged. Tutorial on shading, inking and colouring in our Kawaii self portraits.

Week 3: Have any pets? Want any pets?! This week students will learn how to draw and colour 3 animals in the Kawaii style. A cat, turtle and a rabbit.

Week 4: Time for some food! This week students will learn how to draw and colour some of their favourite sweet treats - an ice cream, cupcake and cotton candy.

My teaching style is very enthusiastic and I like to encourage my students by praising what they are doing well. I will also sensitively point out where there is room for improvement if they request this. The best way to learn is through doing and so my lesson will be very interactive and engaging. The students will need some plain paper, an eraser, sharpener and coloured pens or pencils, including the colour black. No required experience or knowledge is needed for this class. Just a joy and curious attitude about art and how to draw!

*This is a flexible schedule class. Each lesson will be delivered via a prerecorded video that will be uploaded into the classroom every week. Video time may vary but the work time for students will be around an hour long. Learners will then upload a photo of their art work that they complete each week in the classroom. This way I can check for proper understanding of the techniques and concepts, as well as give feedback to the students. They may share with me privately or publicly in the classroom tab. Each student is required to comment on each others' art works with positive and constructive words in order to to develop a sense of community in the class. They will also leave video clips of themselves describing their art work along with any questions they may have for me and the other students. I will also be using fun questions in the classroom relating to anime in order to create anime and art based conversation between the students!

Why choose a self paced?
- Self Paced are great for students who may live in different time zones (Teacher Harriet lives in London UK)
- They are an excellent choice for families who have busy schedules, or cant commit to a specific date or time
- Students can work at their own pace. Videos can be paused and rewatched at any time

Please note: this is the same material used for the live classes 'Who Me? Yes You! Let's Draw a Kawaii Style Self Portrait'.

Hello! My name is Harriet Horner and I am from London in the UK. I teach creative classes, including interesting and dynamic art classes, along with art history classes. They including a lot of making and creating from the students side and most importantly they are very fun!

I have a bachelors degree in Fine Art from University of the Arts London and have worked with the acclaimed artist Anish Kapoor for over 3 years. I also have my own art studio and have exhibited my art work around London and in the Venice Biennale! As well as my colourful art background I have also obtained a TEFL and have been teaching English online to foreign students from the ages of 5 - 12. I love it! But I cant wait to combine my love of art with my love of teaching and believe that my enthusiasm and knowledge in the subject will bring a great learning experience to my students.

I believe the best way to learn is through doing so I always encourage my students to get involved, get stuck in and trust in the process! I love to interact with my students and get to know them in the lessons. I am an encouraging, enthusiastic and patient teacher who will give my students the tools they need to let their creativity flow and positive reinforcement to help boost their confidence in their own creative skillset.
