Class Experience

In this fun and one time course students will be introduced to costume design, for princesses!
Learners will be taken through step by step instruction to create a gown [or outfit] fit for a princess, using watercolor paint. Learners will be encouraged explore color, proportion and watercolor techniques [wash, dry brush, and shading].

Materials: watercolor paint
watercolor brushes
water
pencil
paper [watercolor paper or cardstock]
eraser
paper towel
**If the learner is unable to bring watercolor paint, they are welcome to use anything to color with (colored pencils, crayons, pastels, markers etc).

How this class will be taught:

Introduction to Princess Fashion - Students will be invited to discuss different Princess Gown Styles, this is an important part of fashion design and finding inspiration. With a short slideshow, learners will explore different dress styles [ballgown, A-line, fit and flare, column and more]. Reference images are an important part of fashion design and drawing. The group discussion is an integral part of expanding fashion design theory, empowering young learners with fashion terms and communication skills.

Step-by-Step - Following the discussion, it is all about proportion drawing. I will lead the class through step by step proportion drawing, using shapes (and fun) to great a figure drawing -- the beginning of our princesses.

Design Time - With shared screen references, learners will get a chance to showcase their individual style. Each learner will choose their ballgown style, and I will provide step by step instruction for those who would like more instruction -- learners will be given the opportunity to choose what suits them. I will give tips to create more depth and movement in all gowns.

Watercolor - I will give a short demonstration on creating shading, movement and blending using terms like [wash] [wet-on-wet] [dry brush].

Independent work time - I let the learners take the lead in their own work for the final 10-15 minutes of class, their finished paintings should reflect them and their personal style. All paintings will be unique and original, celebrating their artistic style.

Teaching Style: I like to teach the whole group with step by step instruction. Then, work with each individual on their strengths and improvables.

Experience: No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn something new. Please note that this is not an advanced class. I do however, adjust the lesson for learners who are more advanced, and incorporate advanced techniques for those who would benefit.
