Class Experience

Students will learn how to create a unicorn cupcake using new skills. They will learn how to quickly ice the top of a cupcake smoothly and evenly without having to use a knife or spatula. They will also learn how to draw fine lines on the icing with gel.
No homework, but you might want to finish up your cupcakes when class is over!
Supplies/Equipment: - SMALL ZIP LOCK BAGS (at least 2). The student will be poking holes in the bags, so they will be thrown out at the end. - REGULAR SIZED PAPER CLIP. This is to poke a very tiny hole in the plastic bag, so I recommend avoiding the plastic coated ones since they are a bit thicker. - SMALL MICROWAVE-SAFE BOWL to melt the icing in. - A PLATE TO WORK ON - A PLATE TO PUT FINISHED CUPCAKES ON - SPOON - SCISSORS - DINNER KNIFE Ingredients: - PRE-BAKED AND COOLED CUPCAKES IN LINERS (CUPCAKE LINERS, BOXED CAKE MIX, and the ingredients to make it, mostly likely EGGS and OIL), - CAN OF WHITE FROSTING (NOT FLUFFY!) Pillsbury Creamy Supreme works well. It is important that you DO NOT USE "FLUFFY" FROSTING, as you may end up with a huge "Pinterest fail." Because we'll be melting the frosting for the top of the cupcakes, we need a more solid frosting. - BUGLES corn snacks (original flavor). - COLORED SUGAR for the inside of the unicorns' ears - gold or pink or purple works well. - WHITE MINI MARSHMALLOWS: It is important that these are mini and NOT full-sized. - MULTI-COLORED SPRINKLES to create the mane. For the cupcakes in the picture I used Walmart’s Great Value Decorating Sprinkles Flowers on some of them and Betty Crocker Sprinkles Star on the others. - BLACK DECORATING GEL to draw on the eyes/eyelashes. Approximate Cost of Ingredients assuming Walmart prices is $12.20 (without tax). This pricing assumes you already have eggs and oil. Bugles ($3) + Frosting ($1.35) + Cake Mix ($1.35) + Cupcake Liners ($1) + Colored Sugar ($1.50) + Mini Marshmallows ($1) + Multi-Colored Sprinkles ($1.50) + Black Decorating Gel ($1.50)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Prior to class, I recommend making sure your child knows how to operate the microwave in five-second increments, which they'll be doing to melt the icing.
