In this four week class, students will get moving to songs from the movie Encanto! We will begin class with a welcome activity to say hello to everyone and find out how everyone is feeling that day, and then continue with a brief physical warm up to wake up our bodies and feel out the space. We will then move on to learning a broken down, basic musical theatre dance combination set to about 45 seconds of the song of the day. Dance steps may include slides, turns, improvising poses, and many more. We will take a small water and brain break at the halfway point and do a brief free dance to another song to explore our own movement before returning to learning the prepared choreography. In the last few minutes of class, we will have a final performance of our dance combination (anyone at home is welcome to watch if the student wishes!). Students can also have a costume accessible for our final performance! Please note the instructor will NOT appear in costume. After the final performance, we will take a moment to share a word or a sound about how we felt about our performance. On the last day of class, we will take a moment for students to share their favorite dance move that we learned over the week, and applaud each other on our accomplishment!
Learning Goals
By the end of our session, students will have a new knowledge of different types of beginner dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They might also learn a new song!

Parental Guidance
Students should be in a space where they have room to move (seated with headphones is not advisable for this class!). Students should also wear sensible footwear (no open toe shoes or heels). Barefoot or socked feet are welcome!

As a baby, preschool, and elementary theatre and music teacher, I have worked with students ages 5 months to 12 years in this format. I believe that moving our bodies is a great way to keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative, while challenging them to remember specific movements in a piece of music keeps their brains sharp. This is a unique class in that students have the chance to perform Broadway style dance combinations from their living rooms four days in a row, and get to know some new friends from around the world!
