Class Experience

I began teaching a variety of tap classes in 2012, ranging in age from 3-15. I have been a dance choreographer and vocal coach for secondary musical theatre programs over the past three years. Some of my show credits include "Into the Woods," "Mamma Mia!," and "Shrek the Musical." Prior to this, I studied dance in the following styles: ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, lyrical, and musical theatre. I also took private voice lessons, group voice lessons, and led a show choir to "superior" ratings in judged competitions.

Learners should wear close-toed shoes, regardless if tap shoes or not. If students wear tap shoes they will need a board or dance floor to tap on. Tap boards and dance floors can be purchased from various places online. An affordable and easy option is a piece of birch plywood from a hardware store. If you use this option I recommend placing a towel, rug, or yoga mat under the board to be more gentle on the dancer's joints. Dancers should also have water nearby as this class includes physical activity.

While tap shoes are not required, students should wear closed-toed shoes to protect their feet. Students should have an open space to be able to move. If students do wear tap shoes, they will need a board or dance floor to stand on as tap shoes can be slippery on other surfaces. Some moves will require standing on one foot, so learners need to be mindful of their balance. The warm-up in this class will be sufficient for the type of dancing taught.
