What's included
Class Experience
In this high energy, flexible schedule class, students will learn four different beginner musical theatre dance combinations set to the music of Hamilton! Each week we will focus on learning a particular dance step, and then incorporate it into the minute long choreography for the week. See below for the course overview: Week 1: Grapevine (we will spend time at the beginning of the class exploring how to do a grapevine and the different ways to incorporate it into a dance, and then use it in our song of the day) Week 2: Jazz Square (we will spend time at the beginning of the class learning how to do a jazz square, the different names it sometimes has, and then use it in our song of the day) Week 3: Lindy Ball Change (we will spend time at the beginning of the class learning how to do a kick ball change, how to change the way it is done while still maintaining the integrity of the steps, and then use it in our song of the day) Week 4: Pivot (we will spend time at the beginning of the class learning how to do a pivot, adding arms to enhance the move, and then see it in our song of the day). Also in the final week students will be asked to choose their favorite move they learned in class, whether it is number one move we learn each week or something else, and record themselves doing it and telling us why it's their favorite. Each week there will be an interactive and instructional video of Miss Lauryn beginning with a physical warm up, breaking down the step of the day, and then teaching 50 seconds to a minute of beginner choreography set to a Hamilton song. Students will learn the song from this video and then post a video of themselves on the classroom page. Students will be required to comment on at least one other student’s video, and Miss Lauryn will provide feedback for each student as well. Flexible classes are great for dance because it allows students to pause and go back at any time, allowing them to learn choreography without the pressure of keeping up with a group. This is also an excellent option for families that have busy schedules and are unable to commit to the same day and time each week. Miss Lauryn is always available via Outschool's conversations, and will also schedule a live meeting each week to answer questions and talk about any of the choreography if students have questions.
Learning Goals
By the end of our session, students will have a new knowledge of different types of dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They will also develop their confidence in performing and using their body in a new athletic way. Finally, they will use their new knowledge of dance to choose which they felt the most confident in and share it with others. And they might even learn a new song!
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some Hamilton songs feature suggestive language and/or profanity. We will avoid these songs in class or use a clean version, but if students chose to listen to the soundtrack outside of class please be aware!
Also, students should be in a space where they have room to move (seated with headphones is not advisable for this class!). Students should also wear sensible footwear (no open toe shoes or heels). Barefoot or socked feet are welcome! Please also have water, juice, lemonade, or some type of liquid nearby to stay hydrated throughout class (soda would not be the best choice to stay hydrated!).

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a baby, preschool, and elementary theatre and music teacher, I have worked with students ages 5 months to 12 years in this format. I believe that moving our bodies is a great way to keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative, while challenging them to remember specific movements in a piece of music keeps their brains sharp. This is a unique class in that students have the chance to perform Broadway style dance combinations from their living rooms!
