Class Experience

Join our exciting coding camp and embark on an adventure into the world of game development! Perfect for anyone curious about how video games are made, this camp will teach you a range of cool coding skills over four fun-filled sessions. No experience necessary.

We develop our games on the Scratch Game Lab platform, which is perfect for young coders. To participate, you'll need a free Scratch account. Don't worry, it's quick and easy to set up!

We recommend using a separate large-screen device, such as a tablet or second monitor/computer, for your Zoom call. This setup allows you to follow the lesson closely while simultaneously engaging in coding activities without switching between windows.

Each week, we dive into coding a new game, so you can join us for multiple weeks and keep the fun going! Each project is inspired by a popular game, but we'll be creating simplified versions instead of exact clones. This way, you’ll get to learn and experiment with different game mechanics and design your own unique creations!

What You’ll Learn Over 4 Exciting Days:

Day 1: Sprite Design and Movement
Sprite Design: Get hands-on with creating your own game characters and objects. You’ll learn about pixel art and how to bring your ideas to life on screen.
Basic Movement: Discover how to make your characters move! Learn to code simple movements like walking, running, and jumping, and see your sprites come to life.

Day 2: Variables and Player Controls
Understanding Variables: Learn what variables are and how they are used in coding to store information.
Player Controls: Discover how to use your keyboard or mouse to move sprites in the game.

Day 3: Conditional Statements and Sprite Collisions
Conditional Statements: Dive into the logic of game design with conditional statements. Learn how to make decisions in your game, like what happens when a player collects a power-up or encounters an enemy.
Sprite Collisions: Discover how to make your characters interact with each other and the game world. Learn to code collisions, so your sprites can bump into or pick up objects.

Day 4: Setting Win/Lose Conditions
Winning and Losing: Learn how to set win and lose conditions in your game. Understand how to determine when a player has achieved victory or met defeat.

Final Touches: Combine everything you’ve learned to make a complete game. Add elements that signal the end of the game, such as messages or animations for winning and losing.

Why Join Us?
Interactive Learning: Our sessions are designed to be hands-on and interactive, ensuring you’re always engaged and learning by doing.
Creative Expression: Unleash your creativity as you design unique characters, levels, and game mechanics.
Supportive Environment: Our friendly instructors are here to help you every step of the way, making coding fun and accessible.
Connect with Peers: Meet other young coders who share your passion for games and technology.

By the end of the camp, you’ll have created your very own simple game and gained a solid foundation in coding and game design. Whether you’re a beginner or have some coding experience, this camp is the perfect place to start your game development journey.

Supply List
Students would need an account onScratch which is completely free. They should do this with their parents before the first class. I recommend that they have the Zoom call on a separate large-screen device like a tablet or second monitor/computer. That way they would be able to follow the lesson as well as do their coding.
