Class Experience

Practicing a second language with other learners is a great way to develop confidence and increase ability with a new language! Often in the early stages of language learning a student only focuses on rules and vocabulary but does not always get to put these things into practice! In this on-going class you will have the opportunity to practice using all that head knowledge in conversation!

This class is for students who have a basic understanding of Spanish and have studied it in the past. Ideally students who have completed Spanish 1 or the equivalent or are at about about an A1/A2 level (see description below)

At the A2 level, a language learner can: Understand frequently used expressions in most intermediate areas such as shopping, family, employment, etc. Complete tasks that are routine and involve a direct exchange of information. Describe matters of immediate need in simple terms.

The speed of the class will be slow to moderate. This is important for all students to understand as this level requires slow speech from all in the conversation for it to be understand and for the dialogue to progress. This is not an immersion class and English will be spoken to answer questions or explain concepts.

In each class we will focus on specific grammar and vocabulary in order to review what students have learned and give them focused practice. I will send written notes and optional written practice in advance so students are able to review it prior to our get together. At the start of class students will do a quick review of the grammar and will do a writing activity to help me gauge their ability with it. The remainder of class students will get to engage with the grammar as they use it in conversation with me and the other students. This atmosphere will encourage speaking and listening to allow students to effectively communicate in Spanish. Through visuals and guided practice students can have focused practice and receive immediate feedback. There will always be students of a variety of abilities and confidence levels -- for that reason I will always encourage students to go as far as they can! After each class student's will receive individual feedback from me to help them know where they are excelling and where they can focus and practice going forward.

This class will be interactive! Students are encouraged to always try, even if they aren't sure! It will be a safe and encouraging place to practice your Spanish! It is a good place to ask any and all clarifying questions! No one is expected to be perfect! Practicing is where we work out the kinks and help develop the ability to use Spanish more confidently and accurately.

The class will aim to end on time but may go a little longer in order to not cut conversation abruptly and to ensure everyone gets a chance to engage.

Learning Goals
Speaking the language in a safe, encouraging space is essential to build confidence in language learners. This class will help build that confidence and also give the Spanish learner real-life practice of what they are studying and learning from online programs or school classes. The small class size, paired with the focused discussion will help the learner leave proud, confident and ready to learn even more!
