Class Experience

This class is a fun way to learn our most beloved themes from popular movie scores with music theory concepts cleverly disguised in the class. This class would be best for cellist who have been playing for at least one to two years. I teach to the class. So in each session, I will keep with a part of tune until the class fully understands before moving on the next concept. We will do a lot of playing at the same time then at the end of class we can solo to present the understanding of the material. All Learners should come with their own cello in good working condition. I suggest you take my class on the left hand in addition to this class.

Class One and Two: Learners will become familiar with "He's A Pirate" from "Pirates of the Caribbean" by Hans Zimmer in d: minor. We will play the piece using standard notation. We will go over briefly the movie and composer. This class will also discuss different basic left extension and 6/8 rhythm notation. I have a print out of the song in standard notation.
Class Three and Four: Learners will become familiar with "Married Life" from "Up" by Michael Giacchino in F: major. We will play the piece using standard notation. We will go over brierly the movie and composer. This class will also discuss different basic left extension and playing in a waltz style. I have a print out of the song in standard notation.
Class Five and Six: Learners will become familiar with main theme from "Star Wars" by John Williams. We will play the piece using standard notation. We will go over brierly the movie and composer. This class will also discuss changing keys and accidentals. I have a print out of the song in standard notation.

If the class is advanced cellists we can speed up and learn more pieces during the six weeks and I will take suggestions from the class. If the class needs more time with a specific piece, we will stay 3 weeks with "He's A Pirate" and 3 weeks with "Married Life".

The goal of the class to have fun with popular melodies from the movies and to have each cellist confidently perform these melodies reading the sheet music.

Hello OutSchool community! I am Katie Chambers, a cellist and music educator based in New York City. I've been running my own private teaching studio of cello, piano and violin students since graduating with my Masters degree in cello performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2005. Highlights have always been our annual recital, our various community-service concerts and ensemble recitals with other local private teaching artists. I look forward to meeting your students and sharing my experiences of traveling around the world playing the cello and hearing your students thoughts on their love of the cello. Cello should be fun and now it is!
