Pretend play is one of the most important types of play and learning in young children. Actual studies have demonstrated cognitive benefits such as increases in language usage including subjunctives, future tenses, and adjectives in their speech. Pretend play allows the expression of both positive and negative feelings, and the modulation of affect, the ability to think about their feelings before they act on them. Pretend play also allows students to learn communication, social skills, problem solving and empathy. In this one time class learners pretend to be a veterinarian and take care of sick and injured animals! They will learn what a veterinarian does and what happens to an animal when they go to the vet. We will pretend they are on a scale and then we will take their temperature. We will check their ears, eyes and teeth and even listen to our stuffed animals heart beat and our own! They will determine if the pet is sick or hurt. If it is sick, we will give them medicine and if they are hurt we will clean the area and put medicine on it and wrap it with a bandage. We will start class off by talking about different pets and the students get to print off and color a picture of a pet they like. We then will talk about other jobs that vets do, like some vets visit animals at the zoo. Zoo animals also get sick or hurt and they need care from a vet. The students will then get to pretend to be a vet! They are encouraged to use a stuffed animal at home and other toys they may have so we can make their stuffed animal feel better! Our pet will be sick or hurt and we will pretend to make them feel better by giving them medicine or by wrapping up their boo-boo! I will ask them lots of questions to get their minds going, and no matter what their answer is I will encourage them and praise them! They are still learning so encouragement is important. Learners and I will pretend to be vets and have lots of fun! I will be using props, puppets, and other toys along side them to make their experience even more fun. Pretend play is encouraged! Bring toys and if they have make believe doctor supplies bring them too!
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is to promote pretend play, as it is one of the most important types of plays especially in young and developing learners. Learners will also learn some basic information about veterinarians and the job they do. We will pretend to be vets, and care for our sick stuffed animals. Learners may have other registered learners in the class to enjoy class with or they can have class with only me, either way the goal is to have fun and pretend!
This class is not to be meant as a tool to teach learners how to fully care for their pets (while we do talk basic care), or to teach them specifics things vets do. We will not discuss surgery, deadly illness or the need to euthanize animals. This class is not to be used as any sort of training to care for a real or sick animal, please seek a professional and certified veterinarian for assistance.
