We use google docs in order to write at the same time for this course, and this is a learner-led course. Class 1: Origin Stories. We will discuss as a class what makes an origin story and explore previous existing ones for other superheroes. Which superhero's powers do you wish you had the most? Homework: Create your own origin story 1-3 paragraphs. What are your superpowers? How did you get them? Class 2: Meet your fellow heroes. Each student will share their origin stories and...
Students will learn how to work together and how to improve creativity. I will oversee grammatical issues to improve overall writing skills in general as well.
With a BA in English, I have learned how to write creatively and academically. Movies and comic books are of high interest to me, and I love thinking up characters with powers. I have been teaching English on Outschool for 2 years, and tutored English for over twice as long. Alongside teaching English, I have also facilitated a discussion group, which is why I encourage open discussion with each class I teach; it enhances the overall class experience.
Homework will include some creative writing assignments to contribute to the entire class project (most work is done in class).
Learner progress is assessed by participation and improvement in learning goals.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The first class includes the discussion of origin stories that already exist, and a YouTube video is shown to explain the "superhero Venn diagram." Comic books tend to have mature content, and some origin stories include traumatic events. Class is learner led, so students may write something graphic/mature.
