This is an introductory course on techniques used by detectives and crime scene investigators to gather evidence and interview suspects. Students will learn about different techniques in each class culminating with a suspect identification project on Day 5. Students will listen to specific techniques, practice the techniques, and watch interviews to extend their learning. The culminating project will give students the chance to use all of their skills and knowledge to solve the case. Class 1: Handwriting analysis- How do people write differently? What clues are revealed by a person's handwriting? Class 2: Fingerprints- What are the different types of fingerprints? How are fingerprints taken and lifted from a scene? Class 3: Trace evidence- How do detectives solve crimes using hair or fiber evidence, tool marks, or footprints? Class 4: Interviewing techniques - How do you know if someone is lying? What techniques do detectives use to convince a suspect to confess? Class 5: Suspect identification project- Students will solve the crime of the kidnapped kitty by analyzing the ransom note, interviewing suspects, looking at fingerprint evidence, and searching for trace evidence.
