Overview: In this story read aloud and craft class, students will learn 6 Spanish vocabulary words, listen to a read aloud in English with Spanish added (Book: The Princess and the Pony), listen to a related song, do an activity together, and complete a simple craft. Class Structure: Class begins with greeting each student. Spanish vocabulary is taught before the read aloud. The storybook "The Princess and the Pony" is written in English, but as much Spanish is added as possible. Students then review the vocabulary which they heard during the read aloud. We then listen to a song in Spanish related to the story. An interactive activity follows, with an emphasis on using the Spanish vocabulary in a playful way. After that, students complete a related craft. The teacher completes the craft alongside the students, demonstrates how to do it step by step, and offers advice. Scissors and glue are required to complete the craft. Parent supervision is advised. Students are encouraged to chat with each other, preferably in Spanish, while they complete their crafts. Teaching Style: This class uses visuals, a storybook read aloud, a Youtube Spanish song video, an interactive activity, and a craft to keep children engaged. Prerequisites: This class is designed to be appropriate for new Spanish language learners and high-beginner/low-intermediate level ones. The class is officially "taught in English," but the teacher immerses students in the Spanish language as much as possible without confusing these young students. Anyone interested in learning Spanish is welcome to join! The Craft: Students will complete a simple craft at the end of the class. This may need to be completed outside of class time, depending on whether we start our craft on time, or not. The craft in this class consists of two printouts. Students draw "the perfect birthday present" on one. The other is the "flaps" for the present. When completed, the students will be able to "open" their present, ideally as their peers sing "Feliz Cumpleaños" to them! Learners will need the following supplies to complete their craft: The Princess and the Pony Perfect Present Craft Sheet printout (two pages) crayons, markers, or colored pencils scissors glue stick pencil eraser
Learning Goals
This class is designed to immerse the learner in Spanish in a task-focused environment. Learners will almost certainly learn a few new Spanish words, enjoy listening to the story, and have making the craft. This class could be used to expand the vocabulary of a current Spanish language student or be used to introduce a student to the Spanish language for the first time.
