Class Experience

Calling all Lego and photography fans! In this asynchronous class, students will get a chance to photograph their Legos in real life settings using Point and Shoot or phone cameras. Each week I will focus on a different aspect of visual composition to help students improve their photography skills. Learners will also interact through a weekly group challenge.

**Class Schedule**
Week 1 – Background and Simplification
Week 2 – Arrangement and the Rule of Thirds
Week 3 – Negative Space
Week 4 – Final Project – Incorporate all three things learned.

**Class Format**
--Monday--
*Powerpoint or short video (under 5m) will be posted, explaining that week’s photography focus. Students should share at least one photo this week that incorporates this focus. This is their official “Focus Photo.”

*Interactive Group challenge: I will place students in groups of 2-3 in order to complete that week's "Team Photo." Each week will have a different challenge that the students must work together to complete.
----Week 1: Background Element Challenge - Choose as a team a common background element (building, pet, human, grass, trees, rocks, etc.). Each team member must include this element in their own individual photo.
----Week 2: Focus Element Challenge - Choose as a team a common Lego piece (Lego weapon, flower, two minifigs, etc.). Each team member must include these elements in their own individual photo.
----Week 3: Storyboard Challenge - The team will tell a story through their individual photos. As a team choose a student to be the Beginning, Middle, and End. The Beginning student will take a photo and share it with the others. The Middle student will continue the story in his own photo, and the End will finish it.
----Week 4: Copycat Challenge - The team will chose one student to go first. That student will take the first photo, and then the second student will try to recreate it as closely as possible. They can both take turns going first if desired!

--Friday--
Learners will share their Focus Photo and Team Photo in the classroom, along with a video or comment explaining how they incorporated that week’s photography focus and group challenge elements.

I will check in throughout the week in case learners have questions or need help with anything!

**This is a FLEX class with NO live classes. All interaction takes place in the Outschool classroom.**

Please be aware that my background knowledge is in visual composition through art history and appreciation, not in photography. I cannot answer technical questions about DSLR or specialty cameras.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Charlotte Mason home educator with a degree in English and Spanish Literature. I am passionate about science and the humanities, and am excited to share my passion for these subjects with your children!

I believe that students learn best when they do the work of learning. This means that I will do my best to put them in contact with living ideas and facilitate their journey towards a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. I want your students to participate in their own education. Rather than rote memorization, we will utilize first-hand experience and the process of narration (re-telling what they have learned from the lesson). I hope your children will leave my courses inspired and with a greater desire to continue learning!
