Constructing these fun LEGO STEM activities gives students in problem-solving, mathematical relationships, mechanical engineering, and more, all while developing their creativity as they simply play. Each class will have a different challenge. Students will be encouraged to use their creative minds to brainstorm ways to build the structure to solve the problem. For some of the activities, I will demonstrate or show possible diagrams of the build however the challenge will be for the student to problem solve, build, share, and restructure. While we are building students will be invited to talk about their favorite superhero and how they might solve some of these challenges. Week 1: Zipline Challenge - Your superhero is on the top of a mountain - can you build him something to get down safely Students will need string or yarn to build a zip line. Week 2: Catapult or Ladder Challenge -Your superhero needs to get back up to the top of the tower, can you build him something to get back up safely? Week 3: Boat Challenge - Your superhero is going to go on an adventure in the bathtub tonight. Can you build a boat that floats? that has a propeller? Week 4: Spaceship Challenge - Your superhero is getting ready to fly. Can you help? Week 5: Oh no! There is a hot lava river and your superhero must get across. Can you build a bridge to help your superhero cross safely? Week 6: Where does your superhero live? Can you build a super home for a superhero? I encourage the students to share as they build and interact with the other students by asking questions and complimenting each other's constructions. Caution the size of the figure and the weight which may complicate the challenges. A smaller superhero or barbie (recommend under 8 inches) is recommended.
