A combination of LEGO® and fun picture books is the focus of this eight-week flexible class! After reading a related pictured book students will utilize S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) skills to build a LEGO® challenge. Along with using S.T.E.A.M. knowledge, they will practice critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Each week will have an uploaded video lesson and applicable handouts. Students will- Practice the skill of creative thinking through higher level logic. Support classmates in positivity, and appreciate all attempts at the creative process. Use S.T.E.A.M. knowledge to solve puzzles or figure out solutions to challenges.
I have over 15 years of experience teaching elementary aged students, and hold both a Ph.D. and a M.Ed in education. I also have current licensure to teach PreK through sixth grade. My educational background includes extensive training in teaching core academic subjects, gifted/creative logic, and all manners of pedagogical methods.
-Handouts, if needed, will be provided weekly. -Pencil, paper, crayons and other general school supplies. -Your own, personal LEGO® brick collection (enough for a few small-medium builds). If you do not own any bricks, consider purchasing them from the company at https://www.lego.com. -You will need access to each book, either from your home collection, digital book, audio book, or checked out from the library.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment is informal as this class is for enjoyment.
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Please understand that if the picture books are above your student's reading level, they will need to get read to the child by someone who is willing to read. Students will need to have read/heard the story prior to starting the teacher's video and the LEGO® project.
