Class Experience

In this five day camp, students will have the opportunity to discuss and learn more about the The Legend of Zelda video game universe and then use their knowledge to develop and improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. Every class will start with reading engaging and interesting passages about video game franchise. After reading and discussing the passages, students will complete writing activities that check comprehension and facilitate analytical thinking about the information in the passage.

This camp is the third of three levels. The focus of this level will be well developed paragraphs using the skills from the previous camps. Each day students will read and discuss a different Legend of Zelda related passage to add to their knowledge of the Hyrule Universe. Then, students will complete writing activities based on the passage to improve their reading comprehension and writing skills.

Over the course of the five days, students will:
*Plan, outline, and organize ideas for a composition.
*Identifying and producing topic sentences for paragraphs.
*Distinguish between topic sentences, supporting details, and off topic details.
*Identify and produce closing sentences.
*Draft a paragraph using an outline.
*Expand and revise a paragraph to create a final draft.

Students learn more when they are active participants in their learning. By centering the learning around a topic that students are passionate about, students will be more willing and excited to participate in the discussions and activities. Students who are shy about participating in discussions will not be forced to contribute to the discussion; however, they will still benefit from being able to learn the skills by applying them to a topic that holds their interest.

This camp is appropriate for students entering grades 3rd through 6th.
