Class Experience

In this reading class, I will help your child grow in their reading skills at their own individual reading level. Whether your child is just beginning to learn their letters and sounds, or if they are developing well in their reading skills, or if they struggle with keeping up with their expected grade level of reading, this class will provide the support, activities and encouragement to help your child grow in their reading.

I will begin the class by getting to know your child a little bit, and then trying to find out their current reading level. Then I will introduce a "build it" or "switch it" activity. I will share my screen with your child and give your child the opportunity to build words and switch letters to make new words. This activity is very helpful in learning letter sounds and how to decode words.

Next, we will move on to a "read it" activity. I will guide your child through reading words with a decoding strategy and then ask them to write the word on a whiteboard (or paper) while they say the sounds they are writing. Then, your child will be asked to erase the letters one at a time as they again say the sounds while they erase.

Then, I will lead the child in a guided reading lesson, where the child will read a story which will give them the opportunity to practice the reading/decoding skills they have just worked on. I will also be asking some comprehension questions to ensure that the child is comprehending what they are reading.

If your child takes a second class with me, then I will begin the second class by giving your child an opportunity to reread the story that we ended the last class with. This gives the child an opportunity to build their confidence and fluency by rereading a previous text. And then we will begin the switch it and read it activities with new words!

I also offer an ongoing version of this same class for learners who would like to keep working on their reading with a regular schedule. If you want more consistency, the ongoing version of this class might be a good option.

Hello!
I have been teaching on Outschool since 2022, and I am absolutely loving it! I love meeting children from all over the world and helping them learn how to read or helping them to grow in their reading abilities.

My professional background/educational experiences:
After graduating from high school, I attended Bible college and then went to university to get my Bachelor of Education degree. I was a substitute and term teacher for many years for a variety of grade levels. I homeschooled my own children for one wonderful year. And then I taught kindergarten in the public school system for 11 years.

While teaching kindergarten, I thought I knew how to teach children how to read, but it wasn't until I found Reading Simplified and took their amazing reading course, that I finally learned the scientific and proven way of how to teach children how to read! The Reading Simplified method works! I have been working with many children for the past 2 years and been amazed at how much and how quickly many of them improve in their reading!

I have also discovered that some children who struggle to learn how to read benefit from Right Brained Teaching Strategies. This past year I have been learning how to help these bright learners with strategies taught by Dianne Craft.

I am passionate about making an emotional connection with each child and making each child feel seen, heard, special and loved. I strive to be caring, kind and encouraging while teaching new concepts to young learners.

I am a mom to three beautiful adult daughters, 2 amazing son-in-laws and a Nana to the most precious little baby girl. I live in Manitoba (which is in Canada:) and I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, attending church and exploring the beautiful outdoors. My favorite activity of all is waterskiing and boating on the lake with my family. When I am not busy being active in the great outdoors, I love spending a quiet evening reading an engaging book beside my fireplace.
