In this two week course, we will meet daily to learn and practice letter recognition of uppercase and lowercase consonant letters. Learners will practice the consonant sounds through visual, verbal, and auditory cues. Each class meeting is 30 minutes in length and will include interactive games, rhymes, and coloring sheets and/or written practice to continue after class. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS THE SECOND COURSE IN THIS SERIES. Consonant sounds that will be covered include B, C, D, F, G, H,...
Learners will recognize the uppercase and lowercase consonant letters of the alphabet and will be able to say the corresponding letter sound.
As a homeschool mom to two young children, I understand it can be difficult to know where to begin when teaching your child to read. Each student has a different way of understanding the basic concepts and this can, sometimes, lead to frustration for parents and students alike. My own children have learned to read and are learning to read using the same method I will teach in this course. I stand behind learning the basic building blocks first. Many times, we are in such a hurry to establish readers that we forget that they may need to slow down a bit and work on one or two skills that have confused them. I have also taught English as a Second Language for 5 years to children and adults of all ages. Many of these students are learning to speak and read at the same time. Although this course is designed for learners whose native language is English, the process of learning the letter sounds is the same. Repetition is key to cementing this skill to memory.
There is no assigned homework for this course. However, I will provide additional handouts that the students may do at their leisure, if desired. It is recommended that students practice new letter sounds daily at home in between lessons. They can do this by identifying letters in books or on objects around the house and saying the letter sounds.
Learners may wish to have some scrap paper and crayons or colored pencils handy. I will provide additional handouts that they may work on in class or after class. Learners for this course should already know the short vowels and short vowel sounds before enrollment.
There are no formal assessments in this course. However, I will communicate with the parents regarding the progress of their learner.
2 hours 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
