Students will learn to read, recognize, and write the 26 letters of the alphabet. Students will also learn the most common sounds of each letter using a system based on the Johnny Can Spell letter sounds. Students will be given a letter recognition page (available on the classroom page after enrollment) in which they will practice finding the letter of the day. (This page will need to be brought to class with them.) Students will also practice the letters and sounds by reading an original mini book and learning an original song.
As a former Kindergarten teacher, I understand the importance of a solid letter foundation for beginning reading. I believe the best way to do this is through discussion, practice and applying what you have learned.
Students will be given access to 26 letter recognition pages and letter booklets to be used in each class. They will also be given access to a page created by the teacher to practice finding the correct letter this is an independent activity. (This page is not required to complete independently but will help solidify their learning.)
The teacher will provide 26 letter recognition pages to be used in class and 26 letter booklets also to be used in class. Students will also have access to an additional 26 letter recognition page for extra practice outside of class.
Assessment will be informal in each class period as students use the teacher provided page to find and circle each letter of the day. (This will be done in class as a group.)
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will be watching You Tube videos in class appropriate for ages 3 and up. These videos will only be between 1-2 minutes of class time each lesson and will cover the letter and sound we are learning for that day. On our final day we will watch a song with all the letters that we can move and exercise to as a review of what we have learned.
