This ongoing class introduces students to short stories for children and focuses on improving their reading comprehension through the use of different activities that require them to summarize the story. Each class will have a different short story so new students are welcome to join at any time without needing any background knowledge. The class will receive some background information on the story as well as be introduced to any content vocabulary words in the story that they may be...
In this class, the students will: 1. Improve their reading fluency by learning new content vocabulary before reading the short story. This will allow them to broaden their understanding of the story. 2. Improve their reading comprehension by discussing the key events, main idea and character traits in the story. 3. Participate in engaging writing activities that allow them to learn how to write a comprehensive summary of a text.
While no formal homework will be assigned, I will post the activities in the classroom after class so that the students may complete any assignments that they did not finish in class independently.
During each class, the learners will need: - The class handout - A Pencil - A piece of lined notebook paper
The learners will be assessed based on their interactions with one another and their engagement in the class activities.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
For this class, I will be using stories from https://storyweaver.org.in/ I will post the links to the individual stories that I will be using in the classroom discussion. During the activities, I will keep my example activity up for the students to see, however, they are encouraged to use the provided link to refer back to the story while completing the activity if needed. Please feel free to explore this site, pre-read any of our class stories and share other short stories with your child!
