In this 1-week course, we will be meeting three times to discuss plot, character development, and setting through Disney stories/movies. We will think about plot, characters, and setting through the lens of various Disney writers. Students will be encouraged to think from the perspective of a writer as we seek to better understand vital story elements. We will be learning these skills through video clips, discussion of the stories, and mini lessons about story elements. After we have learned the skills, we will apply it to our own short story writing. Students are not required to have any previous background knowledge to attend this course. Session 1 - Lesson and discussion on developing characters/supporting characters (traits, beliefs, feelings) - How does this apply to Disney characters? (Applying content with video clips and discussion) Session 2 - Lesson and discussion on developing a setting in a story - How does this apply to Disney settings? (Comparing and contrasting Disney settings with video clips and discussion) Session 3 - Lesson and discussion on developing a plot for a story (rising action, climax, falling action) - Where do you see rising action, climax, and falling action in Disney movies? (Applying content with video clips and discussion) - How could we apply this to our own short story writing? (Students will be encouraged to continue working on the short story after class.)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there,
I am so looking forward to teaching your student. We are going to have a lot fun while learning core skills! In 2016, I graduated from Rollins College with my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I have an active teaching certificate, reading coach endorsement, and ESOL endorsement. I am going on five years of teaching fourth grade. I absolutely love connecting with students and building a rapport with them! My specialty is taking core skills and integrating music, art, and movement. I believe that children learn through their senses and kinesthetically. My style seeks to meet the needs of the whole child. I really look forward to partnering alongside of you on your child's learning adventure!
Best,
Melanie
