Class Experience

Get ready for an engaging and interactive Spanish 1:1 class designed to meet each learner's individual needs and comfort level. The teacher will start by getting to know the students, discussing their prior knowledge and goals. For beginners, the class will focus on basic greetings and introductions. Subsequent classes will be customized according to the learner's specific needs and interests. The teacher uses a Spanish-only video series created for language learners, targeting middle school students, high school students, and adults. Each episode (approximately 5 minutes long) features 2 (sometimes 3) native Spanish speakers from Mexico, who engage in conversations to solve problems. They speak at a slower pace and use basic vocabulary, along with visual cues to aid comprehension. The series consists of 4 seasons, taking approximately a year to complete with weekly classes. It has proven effective in helping students comprehend and learn Spanish. Each season has at least 5 episodes that build on each other, reinforcing previously introduced words.

Here’s what is typically covered during class (tailored to the needs of the learner):

1. **Reading Spanish Words and Phrases:** The student reads a list of Spanish words and phrases, typically including nouns, 2 phrases, 1 regular verb, and 1 irregular verb. This provides an opportunity for the teacher to assist with pronunciation and reading rules. The teacher will reveal the English meanings of the words and phrases.

2. **Conjugating a Regular Verb:** The student learns to conjugate a regular verb with the aid of a chart, which will be removed once the student feels comfortable. The focus is on present tense until the student is confident, with the option to explore other tenses later.

3. **Conjugating an Irregular Verb:** The teacher explains the differences between regular and irregular verbs and shows the conjugation for each pronoun. Irregular verbs are introduced early due to their importance in Spanish.

4. **Review of Words and Phrases:** The teacher displays Spanish words, and the student provides their meanings in Spanish. The student is then asked to predict the content of the upcoming video.

5. **Watching the Video:** The student watches a Spanish-language video with Spanish subtitles, focusing on the vocabulary and phrases introduced in the lesson.

6. **Comprehension:** The student describes the video’s content. They are encouraged to explain in Spanish or mix in Spanish words if they feel comfortable.

Assignments usually contain the following:
1. **View the Video Again:** Repetition helps reinforce what was learned in class and improves pronunciation.

2. **Worksheets:** Includes multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank activities, and a transcript in Spanish with its English translation.

3. **Practice Game:** Students can choose from 4 different games to practice the vocabulary discussed in class. These solo games track progress and provide reports on correct and incorrect answers. The teacher can provide these reports upon request, typically shared during review sessions approximately every 6 weeks.

If a suitable time slot is not found, learners are encouraged to reach out.

Leveraging insights from her own language learning journey, she offers valuable strategies to help students overcome obstacles and reach their language goals.

Since 2020, our curriculum creator has been teaching Spanish classes virtually, witnessing significant growth in her students' language abilities. Many started with minimal Spanish knowledge and, by the end of the school year, gained confidence in reading and engaging in basic conversations in Spanish.
