Does your budding little reader love sharks? In this one-time class your child will write a mini-book (with the copy provided and the teacher's help) about the great white shark. We will first learn about and discuss great white sharks through reading a few pages of the picture book "Sharks: And Other Dangers of the Deep" by Simon Mugford. Then we will talk about some of the exciting facts we learned. We will discuss the sight words we will use for the book and how to write them (I, see, the). I will walk them page by page through a mini-book that we will all author together. Along the way, students will also learn many concepts about print such as capital letters, punctuation, letter formation, spaces between words, the concept of sentences vs. words vs. letters, letter sounds, and left-to-right movement across print. At the end of this class, students will have a book they can read independently! **In order for your child to get the most out of this class, he/she should know most of their letters, be able to write letters (not perfectly), and know some letter sounds.** Format of the class: -Introduction -Learn and discuss: What do you already know about sharks? Teacher will read about new shark facts and we will discuss information together. -Sight word practice: Teacher will guide students in chanting, spelling, and writing the sight words (I, see, the). -Writing the book: Teacher will guide students through writing simple sentences on each page of the book discussing the shark information we learned as well as using the sight words learned (ex: "I see the teeth." "I see the gills."). Some of the harder/longer words are already printed for students in the book. -We will read our book together! Students will be able to color/add picture details to the book if time.
