Each week, we will look at a popular song through a poetic lens, learning about the elements of poetry and writing our own pieces! Students will learn about imagery, meter, internal rhyme, slant rhyme, alliteration, simile, metaphor and more through the appreciation and analysis of popular music. This class is learner-directed, so suggestions for songs are welcome! First we'll analyze a selected song, identify its poetic elements, and discuss how the song is working on the poetic level. Students will come away with a better understanding of poetry, and the inspiration to continue opening their imaginations. Each week, we will leave the class with a solid new work begun, that we can continue molding as we like.
