In this class we will use a simple box of crayons to help us learn about rhyming words, colors and the importance working together. The ability to hear the rime (last part) of a word can be quite difficult for young children, but is an essential pre-reading skill. Manipulating the onset (first sound) of familiar words like colors and names is an effective way of introducing this skill. The box of crayons will allow the children to touch the colors as they practice color recognition and rhyme. The class will culminate with rhyming story about a box of talking crayons. The children will listen for color and rhyming words. We'll finish with a brief discussion of how important it is to get along with others.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Kim Reimers. My pet fish Jack-Jack and I will be helping kids "tune-in" to reading by helping them improve their listening skills. We'll play games, sing songs, read stories and learn rhymes while focusing on the tiniest parts of words: phonemes. I've been an early childhood teacher for over 30 years, and I think school should be fun! Jack Jack has been a class pet for over a year and is an expert listener. (He doesn't talk much!) We hope you will join us!
