US Grade 4 - 6
Literary Elements are the foundational building blocks of all stories. A solid understanding of these elements will help students become more discerning readers and more effective writers. In this one-time class, students will gain an overview of six basic story elements (setting, point of view, plot, character, conflict, theme). We will learn to identify these elements and to evaluate and analyze whether an author has used them effectively to convey the intended message. This interactive class will use a variety of instructional materials. There will be an engaging PowerPoint presentation, an uploaded notetaking worksheet for added writing reinforcement, and class discussion prompts to encourage interaction. Finally, we will enjoy an entertaining video story to put into practice what we've learned. Students will analyze literary elements in the story, create a story map of the plot, and discuss how the various elements work together to contribute to the themes.
