What's included
5 live meetings
5 in-class hoursClass Experience
In this 5-week literacy course, students will have fun learning about the letters P, Q, R, S and T. Together with the teacher and peers, students will enjoy songs, letter stories, printing and art as they improve many skills and learn important literacy skills including letter sound, formation, print form and words that begin with each letter. Each week, we will learn about one letter, as such, during week one, we will learn about the letter Pp; during week two, we learn about the letter Qq; during week three, we will learn about the letter Rr; during week four, we will learn about the letter Ss; and during week five, we will learn about the letter Tt. This course includes many different activities that allow for teacher-led instruction, peer interaction and discussion and independent work. Each class is one hour in length and will include a movement break half way through class. During the movement break, we will listen to a song and dance and move our bodies to the music which provides a mental break for students. After the movement song, students will be refreshed and ready to participate in the second half of class. Each week, students will also be provided with a worksheet that will be completed as homework for additional letter printing practice and coloring fun. Each class will include the following activities: 1. A warm welcome to all. 2. We will listen to a phonics song specific to the letter of the week by Have Fun Teaching. 3. We will then use our "magic finger" to print the letter of the week in the air and then participate in our printing practice worksheet to print the letter of the week on paper. ( The worksheet is provided and will need to be printed prior to the start of class.) 4. Next, we will listen to a letter story by Alyssa Liang and discuss the words described in the story. 5. Then, we will complete the "Spot It and Dot It" Letter Worksheet. Students may use bingo dabbers or crayons when being letter detectives to 'spot' the letter of the week in the worksheet and then 'dot it' with either a bingo dabber or a crayon. ( The worksheet is provided and will need to be printed prior to the start of class.) 6. Next, we will participate in a Picture Scramble Activity, where students will be shown pictures and words that begin with the letter of the week plus pictures and words that do not begin with the letter of the week. Byway of a thumbs up or a thumbs down, students will indicate whether or not the word/picture belongs in the list that represents the letter of the week. 7. Then, as a whole group, we will discuss the words that we have heard and seen within the story and song that begin with the letter of the week thus far and develop a list of words to be written on the white board by the teacher. 8. Next, we will engage in a movement break. During week one, we will move and dance to the song, "Boom Chicka Boom" by Jack Hartmann; during week two, we will move and dance to the song, "Body Boogie Dance" by The Learning Station; during week three, we will move and dance to the song, "I Can Move My Body Like Anything" by Jack Hartmann; during week four, we will move and dance to the song, "Get Up to Get Down" by Jack Hartmann and during week five, we will move and dance to the song, "Body Bop" by The Learning Station. 9. Then, we will work together to complete the poem activity. First, we will find and circle the uppercase and lowercase letter of the week within the poem plus print the letter of the week around the poem and engage in some coloring fun. ( The poem is provided and will need to be printed prior to the start of class.) 10. Next, we will work together to complete the Letter Art and Printing Fun Worksheet. (The worksheet is provided and will need to be printed prior to the start of class.) First, we engage in the printing portion of this worksheet, whereby the 4-5 year old students will be encouraged to print a word that begins with the letter of the week and the 6-7 year old students will be encouraged to print a sentence using a word that begins with the letter of the week. Next, we will draw a picture in the center of the worksheet that describes the words that students have chosen to print. Then, we will engage in the letter art portion of this worksheet by using craft materials to decorate the the uppercase and lowercase letter of the week provided on the worksheet. 11. Then, we will engage in a sharing time, whereby each student will be encouraged to describe their letter art and verbally share with the class which word they chose to use, describe their picture to the group and verbally share which craft materials they used and why. 12. Next, we listen to and enjoy an ABC Phonics song by Have Fun Teaching, which will include all of the letters in the alphabet. 13. Finally, we will end class with praise to all, a reminder about homework and a virtual high-five to all. Teacher expertise and credentials
I have worked with children for over ten years in both the child care setting and in the school setting where I have gained valuable knowledge and expertise. It has been my experience that instructing children on letter formation and associated words is best received through a fun-loving atmosphere filled with songs, stories, hands-on activities including art activities and rich discussion. This is precisely why I have designed this literacy course with these elements in mind.
