Class Experience

Would you like to accurately sing-along with your favorite K-Pop songs? Learn how to introduce yourself in Korean on the lucky day you bump into BTS? Or maybe you want to travel to Korea and experience the amazing culture first hand? Come learn the basics of the language, how to read, and how to write so you can begin your Korean language journey.
In this flex class, students will have an opportunity to learn the beginning pieces of Korean. The main goal for students will be to learn how to read Korean Hanguel, which is the unique character system they use for reading and writing. Students will also be able to practice writing simple sentences, and record themselves reading and speaking in Korean.
This course will not have live meetings, but will meet asychonously throughout the week. Students will watch videos to practice the character sounds, listen to the pronunciation of a new K-Pop song each week, and be given work to study each week and respond with in the classroom. Student responses will vary from typing in the classroom, answering questions from a video, and recording videos to share in the classroom.
Students will be able to view Korean comics, additional lessons, and videos to grow their Korean skills in as much of an immersion style as possible. Students should expect to spend a minimum of 30 min-1 hour of Korean practice a day, but the more they are immersed in music, reading, and listening, the better the skills will improve. Many extra resources will be shared for students to use in additional to required coursework so they may choose to do as much extra practice as they would like.

Students can expect new content to be posted 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). During the 8 week course, the follow topics will be covered:
Week 1: Sounds of Korean Hanguel
Week 2: Reading syllables, words, and sentences; write you name in Korean
Week 3: Grammar of a sentence
Week 4: Basic introductions; common verbs and adjectives
Week 5: Verb conjugations and numbers
Week 6: Dates, days, months, and money
Week 7: Korean food
Week 8: Final challenge, record a 3-5 minutes video introducing yourself in Korean

Students are expected to be activetly participating in class each week to encourage a postive classroom atmosphere and help growth through interaction. A class minimum of 3 students must be met. If not met, the start date may be pushed back a week or two in order to allow for more enrollments. Parents will be notified at least 24hrs in advance if a start date moves.

Teacher Amanda has been studying Korean for 10 years and lived in South Korea in 2014 & 2015. She has completed coursework on Korean language from Yonsei University and deeply enjoys studying languages and linguistics in her spare time.
