Class Experience

This class is a follow up of my class on atoms, ions, molecules and compounds Part 2. In this class students will learn the methodology behind naming chemical compounds. This includes compounds with metals and non metal and compounds with only non metals. Students will get familiar with naming and writing formulae for chemical compounds. Further common acids and bases will be introduced and how to name them.
This class has a lecture format, where I will be talking most of the time but student interaction is always appreciated. There will be several practice problems after each topic is discussed to allow students to practice newly learned skills. Students are welcome to ask questions during any point in class. Students are encouraged to participate in class by answering questions to practice problems.

Learning Goals

Naming chemical compounds and predicting how to name a compound

Other Details

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am Sarah Karimi. I have been teaching science and mathematics to K-12 since 2018. At Outschool I plan to teach Math and Chemistry. I am a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Dallas. I completed my undergraduate studies from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a double major in Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. I graduated magna cum laude and as a senior I was inducted in one of the most prestigious academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa.
I am passionate about the sciences and mathematics. I believe children are born scientists because they are curious about everything around them. They like to touch and feel things that interest them. It is crucial to encourage students from a young age to be curious and stay curious. They should be actively involved in the process of learning and developing scientific skills which will help them conduct a more mindful and purpose driven life.
My teaching style involves by asking the question why? Why should I learn a given topic? I believe it is important to answer why in the first few minutes of teaching a class. A good teacher inspires students by highlighting the importance of learning a skill. For instance, when students learn how to calculate percentages they can find its relevance in their daily lives when calculating discounts or taxes when shopping. I love giving real life examples when teaching math and chemistry. I am passionate about making students aware that things that they use daily, like vinegar and table salt can be explained using chemistry. By giving a face to a chemical compound like acetic acid i.e. vinegar, my students tend to remember the chemical and physical properties easily, and think of its potential uses.
I try to make sure my classes are engaging by asking students their thoughts and opinions about the topic in discussion. Further, as a teacher I teach them techniques which will make problem solving easier and the whole process of learning enjoyable. I try to incorporate real life examples in my classes. This way the students can implement what they have learned in class at home.
My hobbies include but are not limited to; reading, swimming and rowing. I love spending time with family and friends.
I hope to see you in my class :)
