Students should watch the following video "Courage of Famous Failures" before our first class - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ydeyl0vXdP0

Students will read literary and informational texts about how failing plays a crucial role in becoming successful. We will examine Steve Jobs's Stanford University commencement speech and learn how to summarize, find the main idea and fact check the claims made in the his speech. Next we will read and discuss  Philip Larkins, "To Failure", Langston Hughes poem "Mother to Son," J.K Rowlings, "The Fringe Benefits of Failure," Jody Michael's "How to Overcome Obstacles: How Your Biggest Failures Can Lead to Your Success" and Carol Dweck's "Mindset for Achievement."

Learning Goals

Using methods of critical thinking, students will study historical figures.

Teacher expertise and credentials
William Alfred Council is a Freelance Writer / Digital Artist. He has a B.A. in English from Columbia University and is a Desert Storm Marine Corps Veteran. He is also a member of the League of Graphic Novel Educators.
 
A lifelong fan of comics, William interned at Marvel Comics under the tutelage of Editor Gregory Wright. Both a Writer and Graphic Artist since 1992, William began servicing individuals, local churches and organizations under the company name: New Vision Enterprises.
 
Besides Computer Consultations, William has also taught basic business skills and successfully found funding for Not for Profit organizations. He is currently the President of Zephaniah Comics. He has published Heroic Visions: Superhero Role Playing Adventure Game, Against the E.S.T.: Heroic Visions Adventure Module and two ongoing comic books - The Zephaniah Chronicles and Ogden Tales.
