Class Experience

The benefits of chess are many; they will develop concentration, build friendships and learn how to strategically plan. By learning how to play with a clock, students learn about time management. By sharing their chess learning, they will develop their public speaking as well as communication skills. The art of winning humbly and losing with dignity will be taught over time as well as the mathematical skills and taking responsibility for their own actions.
I have been teaching chess for many years and instead of asking students to memorize certain moves, we create and develop stories (David buys a car, Robin and Badman, Dumpling squares) This makes the learning enjoyable and fun, which in turn means much more effective.
There will be two types of homework;
1. Optional - puzzles in a workbook. (Step-by-Step method has been the best chess learning method for over 3 decades). A page a day until the next class.
2. Students are encouraged to play chess regularly, either online or against family members face to face. The more practice, the better those chess skills will become!
PDF curriculum materials will be provided free of charge. These are personalized and provided on a as need basis. Step-by-Step workbook $15 AUD plus postage. One workbook will last student 4-12 months (depending on their enthusiasm for chess)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Progress in the workbook is monitored as well as improvement over the board. If concepts taught in the class are put into action on the board, then progress is being made!
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
