Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In this one-time class, we will take a dive... looking from the surface and going deep down into the depths of the ocean. We will look at a variety of squid that can be found in the ocean, scouring the globe. Using a combination of lectures, slides, photos, videos, brainstorming, and other interactive activities we will learn about these fascinating animals. We will start by taking a brief look at the anatomy and physiology of squid, and how they are able to camouflage so well. They will also learn how to tell the difference between squid and some other cephalopods. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.

This is part one of a three-part series that students can take that will end up covering 36 different squid from around the world. These courses can be taken in any order. In this class, we will cover 12 types of squid: Eye-Flash Squid, Deep-Sea Squid, Southern Bottletail Squid, Bigfin Reef Squid, Vampire Squid, Long-Armed Squid, California Market Squid, Hawaiian Bobtail Squid, Grass Squid, Japanese Pygmy Squid, Robust Clubhook Squid, and the Ram's Horn Squid.

We will be using the website www.nearpod.com for the slide presentation (if they want to follow along) and for interactive activities. No signup is necessary. The student will be provided a code before class which they can use to go directly to my classwork. We will also be viewing a few videos from the Monterrey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's and Nautilus Live's YouTube channels that pertain to the animals being discussed.

There will also be optional printouts to reinforce facts and vocabulary learned. Includes a crossword puzzle, and a search-a-word.

I am fairly flexible. Can be flexible with time zones and accommodate all time zones in the USA, and morning/early afternoon time zones in Australia. If you don't see a class time that works for you, send me a message and I'll see what we can work out.
