Description
Class Experience
This class is an introduction to essay writing, taught by a certified teacher with a Bachelor of Arts in English! This class is designed for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade learners who have never written an essay. We will cover the basics, including brainstorming a topic, outlining an essay, developing a strong thesis statement, transition sentences, and more. Knowing how to write a solid paragraph is an absolute must before enrolling in this class.* Week 1: Introducing the 5-Paragraph Essay +...
Students will learn to write a 5-paragraph essay. Students will produce one high-quality essay over the course of this 4-week class. Students will gain confidence in public speaking as they share their completed essay with the class.
Ms. Price holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and is certified to teach writing to learners in grades Pre-K through 8th grade. Ms. Price has over a decade of experience working with elementary-aged learners in both the brick and mortar school setting, private tutoring, and online teaching.
Students will have homework assigned after the first 3 classes. The homework for Week 1 and Week 2 will be minimal (likely 30 minutes of work outside of class time). The homework for Week 3 will require 30-90 minutes. They will complete their essay, submit it for review, then need to have time set aside for revisions & editing before the final class.
Learners will be given a graphic organizer which will need to be printed out prior to the first class. Some learners may choose to write out their actual essay using pencil and paper. Others may choose to type out their essays on a computer. Either one is fine!
For this class, learners will have the opportunity to submit their essay for written feedback. A letter grade will not be given. Rather, Ms. Price will provide specific, written feedback with both praise and suggestions for improvement.
35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
