Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Ms. Price is passionate about making writing FUN & ENGAGING for young learners! She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, which means she did a LOT of writing in college! Ms. Price also has over a decade of experience teaching young learners in the brick & mortar classroom and online (grades Pre-K through 5th grade). During this time, Ms. Price worked with learners of all abilities. She loves working with reluctant writers who need some extra encouragement, gifted writers who love some extra challenges, and every level of writer in between!

In this fun, engaging class, learners will practice writing descriptive short stories (3-5 sentences long) using their five senses! Each week's story will be created by learners describing a scene from a picture shown by the teacher. Each week will have a fun, engaging topic to make our writing practice fun! While the main focus will be writing descriptive sentences, we will talk about proper punctuation as it relates to what we are writing, including commas, periods, and exclamation points.

In this class, students will first learn by observing as Ms. Price looks at a picture, shares what she notices about the picture, and then writes 3-5 sentences about the picture using descriptive language.

Next, Ms. Price will ask learners what they observe about the picture. After the group makes verbal observations about the picture shown, each learner will be asked to write 3-5 sentences about the picture in their writing journal.

Finally, learners will be given the opportunity to read their writing out loud to the class. We'll have fun noticing what unique details each learner chose to write about the picture!

WEEKLY TOPICS (subject to change*):

Week 1: A Day at the Beach
Week 2: A Trip to the Zoo
Week 3: Walking Through an Enchanted Forest
Week 4: A Trip to Outer Space

*Topics may change based on the interests of the learners in a particular section. These topics are simply an example of the types of topics we may write about. If your learner has a particular interest that you'd love to see incorporated into a class, please feel free to let me know!

EXPERIENCE NEEDED: Students need to be able to confidently write 2-3 sentences independently to be successful in this class. In this class, they will learn to elaborate and add more details to their sentences! If it is a challenge for your learner to write detailed sentences independently, I recommend first enrolling your child in this class first: https://bit.ly/DescriptiveSentences

CLASS SIZE: This particular class is kept to a small class size to make sure that each child has time to interact and participate! If your learner has difficulty writing independently, you are welcome to join (off camera, per Outschool policy) to assist them!

PLEASE NOTE: This is an on-going class, designed so that learners can pop in and out at any time. There is no "beginning" or "end" to this class. Each week contains a stand alone lesson. Learners may join at any time, and stay as long as is helpful for them to master the concepts taught in this class. For some learners, just a few weeks may be all they need to take their writing to the next level. For others, the consistent writing practice, over the course of several months, serves them well. I make sure that each learner feels welcomed in my classes, whether they are brand new or have been with me for months!

📚 CLASS POLICIES 📚

MUTING: I love a highly interactive class, and I do not require students to be muted in my classes. That said, if there is a lot of background noise going on in a home, I will quietly mute that learner's camera so that other learners are not distracted by the noise. The learner is always welcome to unmute to ask questions or share!

CLASS RECORDING POLICY: When you pay for one of my classes, you are paying for the LIVE class, just like if this were an in-person class! I do not share recordings of my group classes in order to protect the privacy of all learners (many parents do not feel comfortable with other families having access to videos that include their child). However, you are welcome to reach out if you have specific questions about something covered in class! You are also 100% welcome to attend this class with your child (off screen, per Outschool Policy) so that you are seeing and hearing the same content.

REFUND POLICY: This is a weekly, on-going class. Your weekly payment reserves a spot just for your child! Just like with in-person classes or extra-curricular events, refunds are not given when your child misses class. If you will be gone for an extended period of time, you may un-enroll your learner to open up their spot for another child and re-enroll upon your return, if space is available at that time.
