Class Experience

Do you have a child who loves Legos? Why not tie in learning too? Come join this ongoing class all about learning and Legos!

Join in once a week to learn lots of fun facts about science, math, social studies, and reading. Topics will vary from week to week and are geared toward 2nd - 4th grade academic learning standards.

Each week, we'll begin with a topic that is fun and exciting to learn about through stories, videos, and slides! (see schedule below) Learners will use prior knowledge they may have about the topic to help grow their learning! We'll have time to explore, ask questions, and engage in our topic before brainstorming things to build about during our class. Examples of themes in previous sections have been Egypt, Famous Landmarks, Simple Machines, Habitats, and much more!

For example, one week we will cover space and your child will get to learn about the planets and other fun facts pertaining to space. Through the use of short clips, a fun book, and slides, your child will pick up on some out of this world facts! Then your child will have time to design and plan a Lego creation related to space.
Depending on group size and age ranges, I love using breakout rooms so your child can interact more directly with others. It's a great way to develop and strengthen both oral language and social skills.

Students will have the opportunity to share and discuss their creations with other learners. Promoting good listening and learning how to ask questions and give compliments are important skills we work on when sharing. Please know, sharing is encouraged but not required during class.

After class, I will send out some additional resources to your child via Outschool. It may be a "fact sheet" to correlate with the topic, a book list, websites, or other materials that can be used to further your child's exploration of our topic.

Please note: topics will vary from week to week and some may be new concepts for your child or could be a review depending on what content he/she has covered in his/her school learning. If you would like to know particular topics, please send me a message.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
As an experienced classroom teacher in 2nd and 3rd grade, I have a broad knowledge of various topics and concepts taught for this age group. Additionally, my work as an elementary school librarian has allowed me to expand that curriculum expertise to students in K - 5 . I always love to find ways to incorporate books with learning topics! During this course, I will draw from my experience in the classroom and library to create short mini lessons on a particular topic using lots of different resources. Selecting topics that are well received by students will help your child get excited about learning. Your child will be able to apply what we learned by building a Lego creation. I love to present material in a fun and engaging way to get your child motivated and interested in our topics each week. Using Legos to demonstrate his/her learning, your child will have a blast building and sharing about his/her creation!
