With such advanced technology, it can be difficult to filter out the noise and fluff to focus on the essentials. My philosophy is that digital art works best when you bring the fundamentals of traditional art into the program. Digital art techniques should serve to enhance a strong foundation, not as a shortcut for it. What digital art offers over traditional art is much more forgiveness and room for experimentation; however, that can come at a cost if you are not careful. In this class, I will be going over how to approach thinking about and using brushes, how to use layers and masks, and the simple steps the pros use to take their art where it needs to go, from sketch to line work, quickly and efficiently. I will be performing a demo as a way to show off the different areas of the software, as well as the small tips and tricks I have come to develop after using the software almost every day for a year. There are many different approaches to creating art within the software. I hope to show off the building blocks so that each learner can run in their own direction with it and avoid the common pitfalls.
Learning Goals
Students will gain confidence in learning to use a new and possibly daunting program, as well as the importance of the relationship between traditional and digital mediums. My hope is that they leave the class feeling encouraged and ready to experiment.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! My name is Carlos and I teach classes for foundation in learning how to draw characters for use in animation. I focus on the concepts first, make sure they are easily digestible according to the age range, and apply them in a way that is relevant to what the student finds interesting. Younger kids respond more to crafts while I reserve more conceptual approaches for the older students; however, I think all students benefit when they are challenged and trusted to learn.
I am a graduate of the University of Florida (with a bachelor's in Anthropology) and have taken classes at the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena, and have worked as an illustrator of children's books for the last two years. I see teaching as another way for me to learn! Art is a vehicle for exploring the world at any age, and curiosity is the fuel. I want to push my students to ask questions about the world and I want to teach them not only to focus on the "what", but also the "why" of things. All while being fun and silly :) I'm a big nerd about anything animated and have an interest in learning about someone else's slice of life, no matter their background. I like to keep things loose and to make failure a friend we can learn from, rather than avoid. To improve at art is to improve at understanding yourself.
