Class Experience

In this Flexible Class you will learn the how to sing different POP styles and how to sing with heathen technique. Good for no experience as well as singers with experience. We will use Disney Descendants songs to practice and explore various POP singing styles.

Please note that this class does not meet live, it is a flexible class, so lessons are pre-recorded.

Each week I will post the lesson videos and materials. I will lead a vocal warm up that will take about 10-15 minutes. The warm-up helps us prepare our voices to sing as well as practice specific techniques. Then we will dig into the week's specific technique/subject. We'll look at/listen to examples from Disney Descendants, we'll do vocal exercises to practice the technique, and there will be comprehension questions sprinkled throughout to ensure the learners are grasping the concepts. After we understand our week's subject/technique we will practice it to the Disney Descendants' songs. At the end of class we'll play a musical Kahoot game - these games will build upon the previous weeks to ensure that learner's are retaining the knowledge they've learned in a fun way. Each week I'll also ask for a small part (or all of the student wants) of the song be recorded by the student and posted in Outschool for feedback from me as well as support and encouragement from the other students! In total, lesson will take 45-60 mins to complete.

Here is the weekly subject/technique breakdown:
Week 1: The basics: Breath, Vowels and Consonants, and Vocal Placement for Pop singing
Week 2: Singing Low Vs. High
Week 3: Riffs and Runs
Week 4: Belt-Mixing (especially those high, sustained notes)
Week 5: Rapping and Rhythm
Week 6: Performance Week! Pick one of the songs we worked on (or maybe a one we didn't that you wanted to sing) and put everything you've learned together!

How Learners will interact: Learners interact with one another through sharing videos of them singing from that week's assignment and commenting on each other's videos. There is a Kahoot game at the end of class testing learner's comprehension of the lessons. Learners will also be doing warm-up exercises with me via the video. And there will be interactive questions throughout the lesson lecture!

This class can be taken by younger or older children. Reach out to me if you would like to know if it is the right class for your learner.

Participation is essential to ensure proper understanding of the materials and to promote a sense of community in class. You can post polite comments on each others videos.
Learning Goals
This class will provide the learners with a better understanding of how their voice works, and build a foundation for healthy singing habits. We will focus specifically on singing Pop, but the basics apply to ALL singing styles. All while having fun!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome! My name is Miss Alix. I love to teach singing techniques that help my students discover their own unique voices and style of expression. I encourage positivity (to yourself and others), fun, and confidence in my classes. I am always so excited to work with my students and that energy never fails to spark creativity and active imaginations*.

A little bit about my credentials and experience: I received my Master of Arts in Musical Theater from the Royal Academy of Music in London. I am a certified singing teacher. I work professionally as an actor and singer performing on stage and in film, as well as narrating audiobooks. I have been teaching kids of various ages for several years and nothing makes me happier than when a student has a performance breakthrough, even if it's just that they've gained some confidence. I was also homeschooled until high school (military family), so I know the ins and outs of homeschool/online school life, and how hard it can be to supplement that education with electives, especially in the arts.

I believe involvement in performing arts is a fantastic and important way for kids to discover who they are and how to express themselves. They learn to be open-minded as they literally put themselves in other people's shoes. The confidence, expressiveness, and empathy that kids learn in performance arts bleed into every aspect of their life.

When I'm not nerding out about performance-related things I love to be outside in nature. If I'm not outside you can usually find me cuddling with my cat reading YA fantasy or watching something Marvel related. And I'll always, always have a cup of coffee nearby.

Happy learning!

Class Policies:

1) I expect all students to be respectful and supportive of themselves and their classmates. My classroom is a safe place to practice, mess up, and make break-throughs. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and you will always learn something by watching your classmates learn.

2) I aim to keep classes within the scheduled time frame, however, classes may run a few minutes under or a few minutes overdue to the energy/participation of students on that specific day.

3) I will start at the scheduled time, even if all learners are not in the classroom.

4) I will offer full refunds for missed class if I am informed at least 24 hours in advance.
